Dear IABA Members: I would like to report on the IABA's most recent activities.
We recently attended the annual meeting held by AIJA (International Association of Young Lawyers) in Amsterdam, Holland. Based on the Memorandum of Understanding between both organizations that calls for undertaking joint events and activities, we decided: (I) to invite AIJA to the IABA's Council Meeting scheduled for October 2011 in Brasilia; (II) to hold a reception for AIJA members in Sao Paulo in November 2011; and (III) to organize a joint seminar in 2012 or 2013. Our goal remains to bring both organizations closer, and good synergies exist, given that AIJA seeks to attract more young lawyers throughout Latin America and the IABA throughout Europe.
In addition, the Council Meeting to be held from October 20th through 22nd in Brasilia is rapidly approaching. Our academic program will feature speakers from important institutions, and will take place at the headquarters of the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil). IABA colleague Leonardo Palhares is heading the organizing committee that is preparing to acquaint participants with the best of Brasilia, a fascinating capital city built just 50 years ago and home to the country's executive, judicial and legislative branches. As conference hotels rapidly fill up, I recommend that anyone planning to attend make reservations quickly.
Finally, a meeting was held from September 3rd to the 6th in Valparaiso, Chile, (the seat of Chile's National Congress) with premieres and heads of delegation from the 34 member states of the Organization of American States (OAS). The meeting was organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Civil Charter, and the IABA was represented by my First Vice-President, Rafael Veloz Garcia. Chilean President Sebastián Piñera inaugurated the event, which was presided by OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza. Thanks to all IABA colleagues who could attend this event on our organization's behalf. André de Almeida (IABA), Alessandra Tarissi (former President of AIJA), Tanjia Jussila (President of AIJA) Respectfully,
Dr. André de Almeida President
