ACTIVITIES OF THE PRESIDENT AND HIS REPRESENTATIVES

Dear IABA Member Colleagues:

In this November newsletter, we describe some of the most important activities undertaken over the past weeks. At the beginning of October, we represented the IABA at the annual meeting of the UIA (Union Internationale des Avocats) in Miami, where we gave a presentation at the Opening Assembly on the Rule of Law in Latin America. Several prominent international lawyers were present, including presidents and representatives from various entities.

On October 16, 17 and 18, we represented the IABA at AIJA's Mid-Year Meeting, and the IABA's Sao Paulo Chapter held a dinner for the AIJA leadership in celebration of the existing and continued partnership and solidarity between our organizations. AIJA's president (Tanjia Jussila) was present, as were various IABA members from Brazil, including Edson Miranda, Ruy Camilo, Leonardo Palhares and Julio Bueno, among others.

On November 21st, we were in Curitiba (Brazil), representing the IABA at the Annual Conference of the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil, "OAB"). At that event, we spoke about the IABA's role in promoting and maintaining democracy throughout the Americas. We were delighted to see once again the harmony and synergies between our two organizations, in large part as a result of the Mid-Year/Council Meeting held in Brasilia this past October.

Finally, on November 25th, we attended the IABA's Argentine Chapter meeting, as led by Alejandro Lapadu, where we gave a presentation on the Democratic Charter of the Americas at a prestigious event supported by the Organization of American States through its Secretary for Legal Affairs and long-time friend of the IABA, Jean Michel Arrighi. We were also honored by the presence of José Octavio Bordón, Lead Advisor to the OAS Secretary General.

During the past 30 days, we've traveled to Miami, Curitiba, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro in order to represent the IABA and promote its continued recognition. We are honored to contribute to its growth, and look forward to providing future reports with the latest news and information.

Sincerely,

Dr. André de Almeida
President
