Nos complace comunicarles que la Conferencia Anual de la Federación Interamericana de Abogados del 2020 se llevará a cabo del 29 de setiembre al 3 de octubre del año en curso y por primera vez será totalmente en línea.
Nuestra oficina, a cargo de la excelente Secretaria General Sra. Lourdes Venes, se encuentra trabajando arduamente en la elaboración del programa académico, así como las agendas para la reunión de Asamblea y el Consejo de la Federación. La situación causada por la pandemia del COVID 19 que vivimos y que a la fecha ha costado la vida a docenas de miles de personas en el mundo, nos ha obligado a reinventarnos y buscar los programas tecnológicos que nos permitan llevar a cabo en forma segura, tan importante evento.
Contaremos con expositores de alto nivel en el tema central de la Conferencia que será “Estado de Derecho en tiempos del COVID-19”donde escucharemos las experiencias de colegas de varios países que nos comentaran la forma en que han tenido que lidiar con las limita-ciones a derechos constitucionales como la libertad de tránsito, ejercicio de la profesión y el derecho de reunión, todos ellos temas que in-teresan a la Federación y que nos permiten denunciar los abusos que se cometen.
Por todo esto y más los invito a ser parte de esta histórica conferencia y a registrar su participación mediante el envío del formulario corres-pondiente al correo de nuestra oficina iaba@iaba.org. De igual forma, deseo aprovechar el momento para invitar a todos aquellos que deseen formar parte del próximo Comité Ejecutivo a que hagan llegar al mismo correo, su manifestación de interés y su curriculum para ser considerados en el próximo Comité de Nominaciones.

We are pleased to inform you that the 2020 Annual Conference of the Inter-American Bar Association will take place from September 29 to October 3 of the current year and for the first time will be fully online.
Our office, in charge of the excellent General Secretary Mrs. Lourdes Venes, is working hard in the preparation of the academic program, as well as the agendas for the Assembly and the Council meeting. The situation we are experienc-ing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that to date has cost the lives of dozens of thousands of people in the world, has forced us to reinvent ourselves and look for technology platforms that allow us to carry out safely, such an important event.
We will have high-level speakers on the central theme of the Conference which will be «Rule of Law in Times of COVID-19» where we will hear the experiences of colleagues from various countries who will tell us how they have had to deal with the limitations to Constitutional rights such as freedom of movement and professional practice, all of which are highly important to the Inter-American Bar Association and that allow us to report to the proper authorities abuses that are committed.
For all this and more, I invite you to be part of this historic conference and to register your participation by sending the corresponding form to our office at iaba@iaba.org. At the same time, I would like to invite all of you who wish to be part of the next Executive Committee to send a letter of interest with your resume to the same email address to be considered in the next Nominating Committee.

Es un placer invitarlos a la 56ª Conferencia Anual de la Federación Interamericana de Abogados sobre “Estado de Derecho en los Tiempos del COVID-19,” que se llevará a cabo virtualmente del 29 de septiembre al 3 de octubre de 2020. Estos son tiempos extraordinarios que simultáneamente marcan eventos positivos e imponen fuertes desafíos. Este año la FIA celebra su 80º Aniversario, ocho décadas de existencia con un valioso legado institucional.
A través de esas décadas, hemos afrontado retos globales, locales e institucionales, pero siempre hemos mantenido nuestra fortaleza unidos. Actualmente, todos estamos afrontando el impacto de la pandemia del COVID-19; y todavía mantenemos nuestra fortaleza y estamos listos para lanzar nuestra tradicional conferencia de una manera no tradicional, virtual.
La FIA fue fundada en 1940 por un grupo de distinguidos juristas para fomentar el conocimiento y entendimiento de la ley, así como promo-ver la democracia y el Estado de derecho en las Américas. Desde entonces, ha extendido su alcance geográfico. La FIA ofrece un foro para intercambio de ideas y desarrollo legal. Como profesionales del Derecho, buscamos avanzar las ciencias jurídicas, continuar nuestro aprendizaje, encontrar oportunidades para desarrollar relaciones profesionales y lazos de amistad, y prestar servicios en beneficio del bien común. En este contexto, las conferencias anuales de la FIA ofrecen programas académicos de calidad y oportunidades para aprender, co-nectarnos y servir.
Aunque la pandemia nos ha obligado a mantenernos físicamente distanciados, con creatividad todos podemos mantenernos socialmente y profesionalmente conectados a través del espacio virtual. Este es un momento propicio para reflexionar sobre el impacto de la pandemia en el Estado de derecho, el cual inspiró nuestro tema este año.
¡Esperamos poder conectarnos con ustedes en nuestra 56ª Conferencia Anual y celebrar juntos el 80º Aniversario de la FIA!

It is my pleasure to invite you to join the 56th Annual Conference of the Inter-American Bar Association on “Rule of Law in the Times of COVID-19,” to be held virtually from September 29th to October 3rd 2020. These are extraordinary times in both positive and challenging ways. This year the IABA celebrates its 80th Anniversary, eight decades of ex-istence with a rich institutional legacy.
Through past decades, we have faced global, local, and institutional challenges, but we have always stood strong together. Currently, we are all facing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are still standing strong and ready to launch our traditional conference in a non-traditional virtual way.
The IABA was founded in 1940 by a group of distinguished jurists to advance the knowledge and understanding of the law, and to promote democracy and the rule of law in the western hemisphere. Since then, we have extended our geographic reach.
The IABA offers a forum for exchange of ideas and professional enrichment. As members of the legal community, we seek to advance the science of law, to continue learning, and to find opportunities for partnership, friendship, and service for the common good. In that regard, the IABA annual conferences offer quality academic programs and opportunities to learn, connect, and serve.
Though the pandemic has forced us to keep physically distanced, we can creatively keep socially and professionally connected through the virtual space. This is also a fitting time to reflect on its impact on the rule of law, which has inspired our theme for this year.
We look forward to connecting with you at our 56th Annual Conference and to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the IABA together!
